Facebook might not seem as exciting as other platforms like TikTok or faithful Instagram, but it remains a cornerstone of any successful social media strategy in Botswana. You might have heard that Facebook is dying, but it is not. While its global growth has slowed, it’s still expanding. In Botswana, Facebook continues to experience year-on-year growth. In fact, of all social media platforms, it has the biggest market share! Current statistics show Facebook has a reach of 1.2 million people in Botswana. Its next biggest competitor, LinkedIn, reaches 400,000, while Instagram trails with only 208,000 users. This means Facebook offers unmatched reach and endless opportunities for businesses to connect with their audience. Lets chat a bit more below about it.
The Numbers Speak for Themselves
Facebook is the most popular social media platform in Botswana. Millions of people use it daily to catch up on news, connect with friends, and follow their favourite brands. This broad user base makes Facebook the best platform for reaching different age groups and demographics. Whether you are targeting young professionals, parents, or retirees, they are likely on Facebook.
It is Affordable and Effective
Advertising on Facebook is budget-friendly, which is especially important for small businesses. You can set your own budget and reach your target audience through tools like boosted posts and ads. These allow you to customise your campaigns based on location, age, interests, and even specific behaviours.
A Platform for Every Business
Facebook works for all kinds of businesses. Whether you run a small bakery, a consulting firm, or a large retail store, you can use Facebook to connect with your audience. It is great for showcasing your products or services, sharing updates, and even running promotions.
Botswana Loves Local Content
One of the key reasons Facebook works so well in Botswana is that people enjoy engaging with local content. Sharing posts in Setswana or featuring local trends can make your business feel more relatable and approachable. This cultural connection can drive engagement and help you stand out.
It is More Than Just Posts
Facebook offers more than simple posts. Features like live videos, events, and groups provide multiple ways to engage with your audience.
Trust and Credibility
Many Batswana use Facebook to check if a business is legitimate. Ask someone, do you have a website and people will respond, “Yes, I have a Facebook page”. Having an active and professional Facebook page shows that your business is real and trustworthy. It also gives potential customers an easy way to contact you, ask questions, and see reviews from others.
It Drives Traffic to Your Website
If your business has a website, Facebook is a great way to direct people there. By sharing links to blog posts or product pages you can use Facebook to increase website traffic and even improve your search engine ranking.
Community Building
Facebook is all about building communities. Whether it is through a page, group, or engaging posts, you can create a space where people feel connected to your brand. This is particularly important in Botswana, where personal relationships and community trust play a big role in business success.
Conclusion
If you are building a social media strategy for your business in Botswana, Facebook should remain a top priority. Its broad audience, affordability, and versatile tools make it the perfect platform for connecting with your customers and growing your business. Do not overlook its power—it might just be the key to your success.

By making a thoughtful assessment, you can make an informed decision to determine if Threads is a beneficial choice for your business’s expansion and online visibility.
BUT, there’s always a but. Although this blog post endorses Threads as the latest dazzling platform, we aren’t avid tweeters. Therefore, it might not be our ideal match. Our tactic? Secure our handle, link it to our Instagram, and take a leisurely reconnaissance to see if it aligns with our interests.
P.S If you need a little help figuring out how to get Threads simply download the app and then have a read of Instagram’s help.
Hello to all potential Digital Gems customers and everyone interested in the wonders of email marketing! We’re going to demystify the art of effective email marketing by discussing the ‘5 P’s’: Purpose, Personalization, Promotion, Proofreading, and Performance analysis.
1. Purpose
The first ‘P’ stands for Purpose. Every successful email marketing campaign starts with a clear purpose. Are you trying to inform, engage, or sell? In our case, we’re looking to build brand awareness for Digital Gems, a vibrant digital marketing agency. It’s crucial that our emails reflect our brand’s uniqueness, creativity, and expertise. Defining your purpose will guide every other step of the process, from creating content to analyzing results.
2. Personalization
Personalization isn’t just about adding your recipient’s name to the email. It goes far beyond that. It’s about understanding your audience’s needs, interests, and habits. When your emails resonate with your audience on a personal level, they are more likely to remember your brand. Tools like customer segmentation and dynamic content can help make your emails feel personal and relevant.
3. Promotion
Promotion, the third ‘P’, doesn’t always mean selling. In the context of building brand awareness for Digital Gems, promotion could mean sharing valuable information, showcasing successful projects, or presenting team members’ expertise. The aim is to communicate what makes Digital Gems stand out in the digital marketing world. Remember, every email is a promotional tool for your brand, even if it doesn’t directly sell a product or service.
4. Proofreading
Proofreading may not seem like a significant part of email marketing, but it’s essential. The quality of your emails reflects the quality of your brand. Typos, grammatical errors, and broken links can harm your brand’s image. Before sending out any email, ensure it’s free from errors and that all the links work correctly.
5. Performance Analysis
The final ‘P’ is Performance analysis. After you’ve sent out your emails, it’s crucial to track and analyze their performance. Which emails had the highest open rates? Which ones drove the most engagement? These insights can help you refine your strategy and achieve better results. Email marketing tools often provide detailed analytics that you can use to monitor your campaign’s success.
Remember, email marketing is an art that requires time and practice. But, by keeping the 5 P’s of email marketing in mind – Purpose, Personalization, Promotion, Proofreading, and Performance analysis – you’ll be well on your way to building strong brand awareness for business.
Stay tuned for more digital marketing insights from Digital Gems! Oh and yes if you’d like us to run your email marketing campaigns we do that too. Just give us a call.
You keep hearing you need social media marketing, but it feels complicated and you are not sure if there are any actual benefits. In today’s blog, I want to chat to you about some of those advantages and benefits and give you some basics of getting your social media on track. Stay tuned till the end for a fantastic FREEBIE that will give you the words you need to gain traction.
What Are The Benefits Of Social Media Marketing?
There are a lot of advantages and benefits of social media, but let me break down the top three.
1. The sheer number of people on social media platforms. In January 2022, just here in Botswana, the data shows that there were 1.20 million social media users. That is equivalent to 49.6% of the total population, not to state the obvious but that is a lot of people. If you have a business you want to be tapping into that market.
2. It is also free or low-cost compared to more traditional marketing methods. Not to slam a billboard, but they are expensive when compared to boosting on Facebook. While more traditional methods cannot be discounted fully they are less effective to reaching the masses and for a much greater cost.
3. You can create content from the comfort of wherever you are. With the power of Canva on your phone or laptop you can quickly and easily design posts from everywhere. Standing in a queue at the bank, enjoying an afternoon coffee, waiting for your child in the school pickup – just pull out your phone and create!
Get Started With Social Media Marketing Basics
I am pleased to say that Botswana businesses have woken up to the benefits of social media. The negative is that all those companies are now fighting for attention. This means your brand needs to be at the top of its game.
Whether it’s building a massive following or driving new leads to your website, the steps you need to take are the same. You must create and share outstanding content to engage your audience.
Follow the four steps below and you will be well on your way to getting the most out of your social media.
1. Research Your Target Audience
Different audiences prefer different social media platforms. You should meet your prospects where they are.
For example, A travel agency will find bigger success on Instagram. But an artist may find more success on Pinterest. A law firm should be on LinkedIn, but possibly not TikTok.
Look my advice is not to try to be on every social media channel. One you will have burn out and two some of your channels will look lacklustre and not represent you well. As a rule of thumb, it helps to get your business present on a couple of the big four at first.
Next double check where your competition is, and why they are there. If they seem to have insane engagement on Tiktok then investigate it. Otherwise, stick to the above.
2 – Create Accounts for Your Brand
You must now create social profiles on each platform you chose. Your main focus here is to maintain a unique brand identity. Be sure to enter your professional business details. Use a real phone number, address, email and website to increase credibility.
It’s never great if your email address is GlitterFairy67@yahoo.com unless you are selling glitter fairies. If you have an accountancy firm, well umm it’s a bit awkward.
You should use professional design in your profile, including your logo and brand colours. That allows you to establish consistency and make lasting impressions. (Digital Gems can help you with that.)
3- Publish Content Regularly
Publishing on social media is very much like getting fit and going to the gym. Don’t be that person that jumps out the gate going the gym on the first of Jan. We have all been guilty of it. You start out well, going every day for 2 weeks. Then, life happens, you don’t go for a month. Instead, come up with a realistic content calendar and stick with it. (Business Gems has an entire workshop on content calendars – stay tuned for the next time we offer it.)
4- Analyze Your Metrics
Monitoring progress is always essential in any marketing strategy. The numbers aren’t emotional. They tell you what is and isn’t working.
The most important metrics you should track for social media marketing are.
Post reach/impressions
Post engagements (likes, reactions, comments, shares)
Number of page follows/likes
Views (for videos)
These metrics are all available for you to see on your profile. Each one is going to help you refine and improve your marketing strategy.
For example: You may notice that your audience interacts with images better on Instagram, or videos on Facebook. Maybe Pinterest is driving the most site visits when you share infographics. Look at those numbers.
Let’s Be Real
Like any marketing strategy, social media marketing is going to take time and effort. You may not see results in your first few weeks. With our clients, we ask for a minimum contract of 4 months. This helps us build on a longer strategy. Building each month onto the next.
Once you start to build a following, your numbers will always go higher. A social media presence gives your brand a wonderful avenue to engage with your customers wherever they are. Because the chances are you’re reading this within reach or on your phone.
